| Andrew's first presidential campaign |
[12 Nov 2007|01:16am] |
Today Andrew and I went out in the neighborhood to find volunteer for the Hillary Clinton Presidential Campaign. He was really good and did not make a peep at all! He just enjoyed the ride and met some new friends. It was a bright sunny and 80 degrees today. I think I am squinting in this photo, but Andrew looks cute in his outfit grandma Vera gave him!

| Graduated to Milk |
[04 Nov 2007|07:07pm] |
Today is the first day of Andrews only drinking milk! We ran out of formula and decided not to buy anymore. Usually at the one year well visit to the Pediatrician (only a couple weeks away) they assume they are "off formula and on milk". A couple weeks ago (before we went to San Diego to visit baby cousin Alex) we introduced Andrew to a little bit of the milk in his bottle and slowly went from a 1/4 milk and 3/4 formula to 1/2 milk and 1/2 formula.
We slowly weened him from formula because we wanted to check for allergies and get him accustomed to the taste. Andrew has been "slowly" starting to eat table food and started with apple cinnamon oatmeal and canned veggies. He was used to bland babyfood and is not used to seasonings and butter. I takes awhile for him to try something new and start eating it. He is picky.
Check out the gallery this month for all Andrew's exciting adventures!

| Andrew speaks Xhosa |
[27 Oct 2007|02:38am] |
Andrew babels all day long mama, dada, baba for bottle, and he said yes today and will shake his head No to everything. This evening he started to speak in clicks. He will say something in baby talk and then add a click. Very cute. I melt with every smile and coo. I don't what I am going to do when he turns into a toddler.
He is turning into a picky eater. His adjustment to table food is a slow go. He will eat anything with applesauce in it and will gag and spit out his food if it does not include applesuace. *sigh*
I picked up some vitamins for him till he cooperates with table food. Andrew is also the cubbiest he has ever been and has two big dimples in his cheek when he smiles. So cute!

This morning Andrew was standing! For awhile he has been pulling him self up on me. Sometimes it hurts when he pulls my hair, bites or scratches me. He is determined to stand, but then once he is vertical he gets super cautious and sits down on his bum.
Our babysitter has millions of toys including a baby lawnmower. That is what he stood up to and then kept standing with. Once the wheels started to move Andrew fell trying to keep his moving balance.
He is also getting bored with baby food. He used to be a bottle junkie, but lately he wants his cup and a cookie for breakfast. Gavin doesn't know I give him cookies for breakfast yet, but this morning Gavin gave andrew one so I don't think its terribly unhealty. I have to try and find something healthy for a 10 month old who is starting table food.

| He might talk |
[31 Aug 2007|11:12pm] |
|
This morning i heard Andrew say something. Max, the little boy of our babysitter Nichole, said "Ya" and then Andrew said "Ya" perfectly after him. I think this is it. He is going to say something any day now. He has been pretty quite silently mouthing words, but not saying anything. I have a feeling he will not stop talking once he does say something. Maybe on my birthday Sunday he will say something!

| first haircut |
[25 Jun 2007|01:45am] |
we took andrew for his first haircut today, because the tuft on top of his head was getting down to his eyes.
we took him to cool cuts, which is this place for kids with movies, video games and toys for the kids to play with while they get their hair cut. andrew did really well for the most part.
he got a little fussy when she started using the clippers to clean up the back of his head.
afterwords we went to baskin robbins for ice cream, where he tried his first spoonfull of ice cream.
he wasn't a big fan of the Splish Splash ice cream, but he loved playing with the table outside.

we're in the middle of escrow to buy a house. andrew will have a room all to his own (rather than half of his room being used as storage).
i think i mentioned before that andrew now has 8 teeth. not sure his measurements now, but he's getting really tall.
he loves going over to the babysitters and playing with his friends spencer and max. he's almost sitting up on his own now, except he tips over after a minute or so. and he can't get himself up on his own, he has to be sat up.
he's still wearing size 3 diapers (this size lasts a while), but he's now wearing 12-24mo clothes.
he's so amazingly well behaved. as long as you keep him fed, and don't miss his nap schedule, he never acts up and is happy playing with anything he can get his hands on (including potato chip bags, books, remote controls...).
we have a ton of videos that we need to compile together into a new dvd to send to everyone. i'll probably try to get that done some time this month.

[25 May 2007|04:36am] |

andrew's current status: 7 teeth he's starting to sit up his latest sound is a cooing gurgling sound he makes when he's happy he's eating peas, carrots, prunes, and applesauce regularly (and just about everything else) amanda's gone back to work full time and andrew spends the day with a sitter and 2 other boys. here's a picture of andrew with spencer and max at chucky cheese:

his gallery has been kept a bit more up to date: andrew's gallery

| weaning onto the bottle |

so the past week or two has been quite an ordeal of weaning andrew. i think we tried 6 different bottles, 10-12 nipples, 3 different formulas, breast milk, everything. the only thing we could get him to eat regularly was the rice cereal, but that is only once or twice a day, barely enough to keep him going. amanda has gotten him to drink from the bottle once or twice, but only after hours of trying. and he would never take the bottle from me.
but this morning, at long last, he took the bottle with almost no fuss whatsoever. he even begged for more after he finished the first 2 oz, so i had to make a second bottle to finish feeding him. i think it's safe to say, WE WON!!!

| The adventures of weening |
[25 Mar 2007|12:38am] |
The adventures of weaning. Oh they are not so fun. NO one told me that the longer you wait to use a bottle the harder it is to get a baby to take it. If I only knew I would have stuck to my guns and got him to take it.
We have listened and read everything about weaning. In the end Gavin has been trying to give Andrew the bottle in the evenings. It has been 3 days now with this method. I can not even be in the room. Sometimes I take a long shower or leave the apartment completely. I can’t stand to hear my baby cry. It is necessary if I want to go back to work.

Actually Andrew is much more receptive to the spoon and cereal. He always watches me eat lunch and I am wondering if I should go strait to sippy cups and spoons.
I also found out that Andrew can scootch. Here I have been getting his toys for him and he can get to them by himself. I caught it on video and showed Gavin just now. See he can do it! I knew when I left the room and came back to find him by the coffee table or TV that he was scootching.

| Rolly Polly Andrew |
[14 Mar 2007|08:20pm] |
Today Andrew rolled today. Of course it happened at first when I took my 3 minute shower. Then when I went to grab him and put him in his car seat he rolled away while giggling and baby talking. I am determined to get video and send it to everyone!

I am going to start working part time and have been trying to get Andrew on the bottle. The first week I gave up and cried. The second week I went to every Mommy group for some mental support. This week he drank an ounce when gavin tried Monday night and he drank 2 oz. this afternoon from me. I did give up after he started screaming, but as soon as I went to nurse him he passed out. Maybe he just needed to feel close to me. I try to feed him close to me and talk in a soothing voice. I think that was what worked today. I just had to have a soft tone of voice. Oh hell I dont know what I am doing. Half the time I just wish he could talk and make things easier.
He is also starting to sleep more at nights. It isn't consitant, but he has been sleeping from Midnight till 4 and I have to stay up for an hour before he will sleep till 7.

| Babys first hike |
[10 Mar 2007|01:31am] |

It took about an hour to get out the door and to the trails, a half hour to get Andrew ready to go out and we actually hiked for 15 - 20 mins. At least we did it!
We have got to get Andrew to take a bottle. He needs to drink some water out on the hike. It is getting really warm and we should probably take many breaks and hydrate the little guy. If only he will take the bottle.

| Back Scootching |
[06 Mar 2007|09:03pm] |
Andrew is sorta scootching on his back today. I was cleaning up when i noticed he somehow ended up by the entertainment center. I placed him back in the center of the floor and observed him look around and then kinda make his way toward the coffee table by pushing his legs against the ground and sorta flip side to side. He has not rolled onto his tummy yet on purpose. I think anytime now he will do this.
When he does a 360 degree circle on the floor he gets upset. I would to if i kept going in cicles.

| Throwing toys |
[05 Mar 2007|10:09pm] |
I went to the mall to get some coffee and take a walk after a rejection letter to ASU. It turns out there is a kids concert that takes place the first Monday of every month. The malls way to get people in and shop. It works. They give out cuopons and they have a raffle (i won something, but was in the diaper changing station and could not claim it.

Andrew loved it. He liked the millions of babies and singing. He also got some free toys which he kept throwing. He continued to throw his toys when leaving the mall. It was fun the first couple of times, but then fetching his apple core (his favorite toy) became really annoying.
Anyways he slept really great afterwards and distracted him from his teething.

| Andrew is on his Tummy! |
[01 Mar 2007|04:56pm] |
Today Andrew played on his tummy for the first time without crying. Usually if we try to get him to do tummy time he hates it. Also he almost rolled 3 times today, but I notice he is trying to grab toys around him to chew on. I also believe his motivation to roll is because it is comfortable for him to lie on his side or tummy when he is teething. Someone mentioned to me that he might be uncomfortable when he is teething and laying on his back. This explains why he was not fussy last week when i held him (I held him for 3 days and my arms are recovering).

His top teeth are probably going to come in this week. He is really fussy and he is awake throughout the night again. I am really tired and cant wait for another break. Mother nature has been kind and he gets a day or three of a break between teeth.

| Day at the library and some more milestones |
[06 Feb 2007|09:31pm] |
Andrew and I went out to the library for the story hour again. This time he could grasp the toys (well the ones with little handles and rings). Today Andrew also tolerated tummy time for the first time. I think it had something to do with the other 3 month old girl next to him. Also he responded to his name for the first time. I noticed he looked up at me when i was talking to other moms about him. He also is grabbing toys with both his hands and thus he has more control when he grasps.
I also got invited to the park for stroller aerobics this afternoon (yeah people want to talk with me and hang out). I can’t tell you how starved I am for women conversation. I did not have one girl friend in the Caribbean and I have not met anyone here till this library baby group. It's not just moms at this group, but grandmas and dads who do the daytime care giving as well. I also like the diversity of babies as well. It is very interesting to talk to everyone about their experiences.

| shots |
[03 Feb 2007|08:08pm] |
he got his first round of immunity shots yesterday. from what amanda tells me, he was *not* a happy camper. though what baby would be getting that many shots.
anyways, according to their measurements, he is now 13lb 4oz, and 24". Amanda has him wearing size 3 diapers (16-28lb) because they say it catches his mess better.
he's been very good at playing with his toys lately. i think seeing all the babies at the baby group last tuesday showed him how much fun it can be, and he's all excited to play with his toys now.

| Teething |
[01 Feb 2007|08:14pm] |
This morning was actually nice. I got to sleep in till 8 and then get another nap at 9. I was thinking wow maybe Andrew is finally as tired as I am after not much sleep this week. Then at 11:30 Andrew became really fussy and was chewing on whatever he could grab. He has been chewing on his blankets lately, but not like today. Then he starts screaming and crying and I am not sure what the heck is wrong. I took his temperature while I started to change him and wow. His bum is really red. His temperature turns up a tad high at 99.0 and his nose is a little runny.
Guess what this means. Poor Andrew is teething. He can’t really grab things to well since he just started grasping yesterday so I tired to freeze a binky. He started screaming more. So in the end I gave him an infant Tylenol and rocked him to sleep again.
My mom says usually this last for 48 hours. I hope by Saturday Andrew is feeling better.

| grasping |
[31 Jan 2007|09:14pm] |
so today we were picking up the apartment, vacuuming, etc. amanda was making some dinner. andrew was on his little play mat keeping himself busy.
at one point, he started making a bit of noise, so i went over to see if he had a dirty diaper or was hungry, etc. and i saw this:

he had grasped his toy and was holding on! amanda's been making a big deal the last couple weeks about trying to help him figure out how to grasp things, so i figured it was a big deal.
